Internationally renowned interior designer Muriel Brandolini is known for her signature look: tertiary tones, studied clutter, fine art and vintage furniture, patterned ceilings, statement carpets, custom lighting, wicker furniture, and plenty of greenery. And nowhere is her eclectic handiwork better displayed than in Upper East Side townhouse the French-Vietnamese designer and her Italian aristocrat banker husband, Count Nuno Brandolini d’Adda, have called home for almost thirty years.
Built in 1899, the four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath brownstone is being sold at $9.5 million by Anouk Nora at Sotheby’s International Realty. By the way, the couple paid $1.35 million for the place way back in 1995.
As is typical with a grand townhouse like this, there are two entrances, one of which was originally for the family and one for the servants. The garden level includes a large eat-in kitchen, with custom cabinets in saffron, olive and cream, laser cut for a Swiss cheese look, or like they’ve been shot. There’s also a dining room with four glass paneled doors that give access to the large bamboo-lined garden for outdoor dining, along with a powder room and a huge walk-in closet. Below this level is the basement, with lots of storage and a huge laundry room.
The parlor level boasts the living room, with its 12-foot ceilings and wood-burning fireplace. A notable and probably preposterously expensive touch of whimsy is the crystal ship light fixture. Also on this level is an office area that showcases another extraordinary chandelier, this one by Dutch designer/architect Gerrit Rietveld. The next two floors each contain two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. The master bedroom, with an elaborately turned antique Portuguese bed frame, sports a wood-burning fireplace, while another more contemporary bedroom includes a drop-down screen and projector.
If that’s not enough space, promo materials indicate the property “allows for the addition of a fifth floor, roof deck, and/or rear extension of 1,000 square feet.” And of course, the location is great, just a few blocks from Central Park and numerous museums.
The Brandolinis also own a unique architect-designed weekend place in the Hamptons, on Long Island. Colorful, modern, but with Brandolini’s signature vintage touches, the perfect getaway was featured some years ago in Architectural Digest.
