Jennifer Jenkins, the owner of Bummer Lamb Design Services, a full-service interior design business, says many of her clients are using gray and white colors to achieve a minimalist look.

Jenkins sees a resurgence in the use of brown furniture instead of the trend of painting brown furniture white.

Located in downtown Leesburg, Jennifer Jenkins is the owner of Bummer Lamb Design Services, a full-service interior design business.

Jenkins has been creating spaces in Loudoun County homes since 2005, and she opened the studio at 120 E. Market St. seven years ago. She enjoys working with a variety of clients from the conceptual phase through construction and finally furnishing and decorating the interior.

While she designs a wide array of projects, Jenkins says a shift has taken place in the last five years where clients are focused on a “clean and more modern look.”

This includes using gray and white colors to achieve a minimalist look, she said.

However, she has recently noticed a slight change in clients wanting to bring color back into their homes to make interiors more interesting and colorful, she said.

“It is more of embracing a color and introducing a color or two into the room to make things feel a little more personal,” she said. Another color tip she has is to paint the trim and door the same color as the wall to make it feel more cohesive.

Homeowners often use wallpaper to add a bold look or to add color to a room, and it has had a comeback recently, she said.

“The wallpaper is amazing right now. The industry lagged for a while there and didn’t keep up with style shifts and when they finally caught up, they crushed it. They are so fun and it’s a great way to be adventurous and to do a room in something really interesting,” Jenkins said.

She also sees a resurgence in the use of brown furniture instead of the trend of painting brown furniture white, which has been popular over the past five or six years.

“It’s definitely coming back because people are missing those warmer tones,” she said.

In terms of interior lighting trends, she said the “boho look” using organic materials is very stylish.

“Basket weave shades and basket lamps in general are so lovely and a trend I’ve always liked. It is also happening with pendant lights where the woven look versus lanterns is more popular,” she said.

However, she recommends blending that look with other items so it will have a longer life cycle.

“That is the rule of thumb in general — if there is something you like, do a little of it so it lasts a long time in your house,” she said.

With regard to kitchen design, her feeling is that “anything goes” with colors and navy blue will always be timeless and popular. She also sees people using shades of green in kitchen spaces.

With regard to window treatments, she recommends simple panels or roman shades.

“Keep the look very clean. That has always been our approach. Keeping the windows simple is a nice and timeless way to do it,” she said. “I love roman privacy shades because it is really an important layer that sometimes gets overlooked. We also love wovens because they give a nice texture to any room,” she said.
