The founder of Cailini Coastal brought a bit of New England to Southern California.

With its blue and white color scheme, classic wainscoting, and wicker and rattan accents, you might mistake this well-ventilated family home in a New England seaside town. In fact, this is what Meg Young pursued while renovating her family's residence in Southern California with the help of designer Jen Harkavy. "Our home is in California, but deep in my heart is an East Coast girl," Yang said. "My husband and I are both from the Northeast, and we want to bring our favorite New England coastal style to our home in California."

Fortunately, she has some great resources to do this: Young is the founder of Cailini Coastal, a new shopping site that offers beach home decor from rattan hurricanes to striped outdoor rugs. She founded this company last year to help people add a "perfect finish" to their homes. (At a time when many people were unable to afford housing, Young also embarked on a deeper brand mission: In the first six months, Cailini Coastal donated 100% of its proceeds to Family Promise, a company for the homeless. Of non-profit organizations that provide support to their families).

Like its owner, the brand combines California and East Coast styles-this is the balance Young has found in his own home. "In California, the style is more laid-back, simple, bright and airy," Yang said. To reflect this, she almost drew the entire space in Benjamin Moore's "Grey Fog" and Chantilly Lace, and then "incorporated many natural elements, such as recycled wood curtains and rattan furniture, as well as some of the California we have lived in. Framed photography of the beach city. "The result is a relaxed, relaxing space that is both classic and fresh. Continue reading for the complete tour.

Although they did not make any major structural changes, Harkavy worked with Young to determine the flow and layout that is meaningful to their family: "I prefer a more traditional floor plan, each room has its own defined space, my husband I like open floor plans," Yang said. "We sought a way to distinguish each room without the need for walls to separate them."

Yang maintains a neutral background in the living room, but layered textures to evoke her favorite coastal atmosphere.

"This is one aspect of the floor plan that I like," Young admits that the kitchen leads to the family room. "With two kids, it's great to let the kids play or watch the show while I cook or clean. I can watch them and do what I need to do at the same time."

"This is also a good entertainment space," she said. "We look forward to doing more of these things this summer!"

Although Young's home (and store) bridges the California and New England styles, the place where they meet is influenced by the tones of the beach. "The overall palette is very neutral, reflecting the colors you find by the water," Yang said. "We used white, gray, soft green and many different shades of blue."

Buy this room: Chatham large chandelier; Sconsett bowl; hurricane surrounded by islands.

The aesthetics of the house even extend to the laundry room, where Yang covers the walls with blue and white wallpaper and hangs trim art prints from the store. "I joked that this is the brand's showroom... but it really is," Young said of the home. "I launched this brand in the early days of the pandemic and we moved into our home a few months later. Our home became our photo studio, so when choosing everything from lighting and mirrors to carpets and bedding , I chose my personal favorite work from the CC store."

Buy this room: Beachwood rug; Riley scallop wallpaper; Lemon tree trimming art print; Orange tree trimming art print; Navy hurricane surrounding the island; Sconet wastebasket.

Not surprisingly, the house is informed by water: "We live on a peninsula and we can see the coast from Santa Monica to Malibu," Yang said. And, even though she was born on the east coast, she doesn't take the light of the west coast for granted. "We take our daughter to the balcony upstairs to watch the sunset almost every night."

Although she obviously likes this style, Young warns: "Coastal areas will quickly become tacky. The easiest way to prevent this from happening is to make most of your decorations reflect the coastline through colors, patterns, and textures. ," she suggested. "Keep the literal coastal decoration to a minimum and instead focus on works inspired by the coast."
