I’m an interior design pro – six kitchen trends that are outdated, take a look at your lighting if you want to sell | The Sun

BEFORE you list your home for sale, pop into the kitchen and take a look around.

If your home is sporting any of these six kitchen trends, you might want to refresh the space – because these styles are already outdated.

The team of home pros at Hunker spoke to industry experts about what's popular in kitchens today and what styles have overstayed their welcome.

A good place to start is your lighting, where certain fixtures are out of date – or simply not enough.

Warm, frosted globe lights have been popular for years, interior designer Jillian R. Wiedenmayer told the outlet.

But as bringing the outdoors inside becomes more and more popular, consider swapping a traditional fixture for one made with organic materials like rattan or wood.

"The return of natural materials [in] the kitchen will be huge this year," Wiedenmayer said.

You should also consider adding light fixtures if you only have one overhead light, said Cassandra Schinkel.

"Always hang pendants over an island, install sconces where possible, and place small table lamps on countertops or shelves for a beautiful glow," Schinkel said.

You can also implement natural elements elsewhere in your kitchen, like your range hood. According to Sharon L. Sherman, "Wood hoods are making a big comeback."

If you don't want to install a wooden hood over your stovetop, consider swapping it for a colored finish or an alternative metal to update the look.

In fact, matching metal fixtures are out, said Sierra Fallon.

"When someone decides on a finish like satin nickel, black, or gold, they think that every element in their kitchen needs to match – including their plumbing finishes, cabinet pulls, and lighting," Fallon explained.

Instead, you should mix and match different colors to get a modern look that suits your space.

A homogenous look can seem sterile and boring, which is why all-white kitchens are also on the outs.

Schinkel said that instead of pure-white cabinets or walls, "go for something that has warmth."

"[The] same goes for countertops and the backsplash," Schinkel continued. "Choose materials with warmth and depth [to] add dimension and texture."

And messy home chefs will rejoice when they hear Henrieta Imrie's tip: cover your open shelving with cabinets.

Open shelves can make a kitchen feel "airy," but it's much more difficult to keep a kitchen with them looking tidy.

"They require decent styling skills, and offer less [opportunities] to hide those mismatched cups," Imrie said.

Instead, choose cabinets with a sleek finish that matches your kitchen, and trick everyone into thinking you're neat as can be.
