Whether guests are visiting, or family is coming home after a long day, the entryway can be such a welcome hello as they walk into the space.  

The entryway really sets the tone for the rest of your home, inviting you to sit and stay awhile — or at least to feel a sense of welcome even if you’ve just dropped by to say hello. It’s your home’s way of giving a good first impression.   

By giving the space some thoughtful attention, it can transform the experience you have when walking through the door. It’s a beautiful way for your home to invite you inside, nodding softly as it welcomes you into a place of refuge. Regardless of how much space you’re working with, we have a few simple tips and go-to styling tricks for creating an entryway that does all of the above.  

When styling an entryway, it’s important to make height part of the equation. Think about how much space you have, whether it’s one wall or two, and plan for where you’ll add contrasting heights.  

In a two-walled entryway, style the primary wall with a console and the opposite wall with something just a bit shorter like a slipcovered bench. If you are focused on a single wall, find ways to add a variety of heights through the use of mirrors or artwork, faux greenery, or lamps. This is a foundational recipe for success, giving you a great starting point for the rest of your entryway styling.  

Layers have a way of making any room feel a little more thoughtful and welcoming, and the entryway is no exception. Find moments to layer in accents that make the space feel full and inviting.  

If your entryway includes a bench, add a textured throw and a small vignette of tonal pillows. For the console table, we like to think in terms of texture, shape, and material. In this particular entryway, we layered a textural travertine console table with a burl wood box, faux greenery, and a woven basket. You can also incorporate a mirror with metallic accents to open the space or use artwork with a gold-accented frame for a touch of warmth. Mixing materials is a great way to layer without making a small space feel overcrowded, all while adding a little extra visual interest.  

When deciding on a palette for the entryway, you’ll want to consider seasonality as well as the look and feel of the rest of your home. During the fall, we really gravitate towards tonal color schemes and warm hues.  

Incorporating a strong palette into the entryway keeps things cohesive, and one of our favorite ways to do this is through artwork. Find pieces that speak to the palette you’ve chosen and incorporate them above the console or in a grid pattern above a seating area. Bring the palette into decor as well, finding a few pieces that especially call attention to the tones you’ve chosen. We love the Tess Lamp here for exactly that reason!
